NDC unveils late Ft. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings bust to honour his legacy

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in collaboration with the late Ft. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings Foundation, officially renamed its national headquarters and unveiled a commemorative memorial bust in honour of its late founder, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.

The dual-purpose ceremony took place on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka, Accra, marking what would have been the charismatic former president’s 79th birthday.

According to NDC National Chairman, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the decision aligns with international political standards where party headquarters are named after their pioneering founders.

The leadership aims to permanently embed Rawlings’ institutional legacy into the modern identity of the party.

Addressing the crowd, Mr. Fifi Kwetey hailed Rawlings as a visionary leader whose initial sacrifices and foundational principles of probity and accountability paved the path for Ghana’s enduring democracy.

On his part, the Majority Leader, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, urged the packed gathering of party loyalists and cadres to leverage this historic moment to strengthen internal unity ahead of future political tasks.

The unveiling of the bust is part of a broader layout of commemorative programs scheduled across the capital.

The NDC further disclosed ongoing constitutional proposals to permanently recognize June 22 as a premier day on the party’s calendar, celebrating the entire month annually as “NDC Month”.

Following the morning event at Adabraka, the celebration continued into the afternoon at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The afternoon session featured a dedicated public lecture and photo exhibition focusing on the life of the late military officer turned democratic statesman. Renowned Ghanaian lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata served as the keynote speaker, alongside former state ministers Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu and Kofi Totobi Quakyi.

The ceremony, organized under the central theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, among other notable party stalwarts and members of the Rawlings family.
