60 out 88 NPP MPs throw their support behind Dr. Bawumia ahead of 2028 Flagbearer race

60 out 88 NPP MPs throw their support behind Dr. Bawumia ahead of 2028 Flagbearer race

60 out of the 88 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs), led by Asante Mampong lawmaker, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, say they all back the 2024 failed presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to lead the party again going into the 2028 election.

According to him, all 60 MPs supporting the former Vice President have done so of their own free will.

The MP for Asante Mampong, speaking to journalists after a meeting with Dr Bawumia in Accra on Thursday, June 19, 2025, hinted that more efforts are being made to get other MPs who haven’t declared their support yet to come on board.

“The processes are about to commence to select our leadership in the party, and one of the key ones is the flagbearership, and that is where the focus is. Our MPs, the number being 88 we are the political front of the party when we are in opposition. So that responsibility has just come upon us, and we have to take the mantle and do what is right.

…MPs on their own volition have made their own decisions and decided to align with A, B, C and in Parliament as at today, 60 of the 88 have indicated and declared that they want to side with their colleagues to champion the cause of Dr. Bawumia to win the flagbearership and to lead the party into the elections in 2028. So it is a voluntary thing, nobody was pressured,” Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong said.

In response, Dr. Bawumia also expressed his appreciation to the MPs for their support.

“It was a very happy visit, it was a courtesy call and it was a call to declare support for me and I am so happy in terms of the group that have declared support for me from Parliament now amount to just over 60 MPs and you know we have 88 MPs and so that tells you that a very significant number of MPs have declared their support for me.

I just want to use this opportunity to thank all of them…I believe this is going to be very important…I am very happy for what they have done today,” he noted.
