What’s the need for creating a Public Tribunal? –NPP quizzes Attorney-General Designate

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament is questioning the rationale behind a possible creation of the Public Tribunal as proposed by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Designate, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine.

Dr. Ayine during his vetting on Monday, January 13, 2025, hinted at a possible creation of the Public Tribunal to deal with issues of corruption and corruption-related matters.

This proposal seems not to sit well with the NPP members of Parliament, thus questioning the need for such creation since 110 new courts were created under the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo-led government.

Addressing some members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) at a press briefing at the Job 600 Office complex in Accra on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, asked what the established courts were not doing right that Public Tribunals when established will do.

“What is our High Court not doing right, necessitating the creation of the Public Tribunal? In the last 8 years, through the District Assembly Common Fund, 110 new courts have been created. If it’s about more courts, like the NPP, the NDC should build more. In any event, the Chief Justice has the power to create more specialized courts, including specialized criminal high courts.

There is, therefore, no need for the Public Tribunal, which is associated with killing our mothers and fathers,” Dr. Boako reiterated.
