NDC engages CSOs, media over call for a forensic audit of voters’ register

Ghana’s largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday, 23rd September 2024 engaged some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Diplomatic Corp among others over its call for an independent audit of the 2024 voters’ register.

The NDC’s meeting with the various groups was to share some worrying details find in the provisional voter’s registry which was recently exhibited nationwide.

The discrepancies find in the provisional voter’s register for the 2024 general elections has raised lost of doubts among some observers and political parties which have since led to calls for an independent audit of the vote register.

Addressing the gathering, the Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, indicated that the managers of the electoral management body, the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Madam Jean Mensah lacks the capacity to build a robust register for the 2024 elections.

He said the NDC’s call for an independent audit of the electoral system is to ensure that the 2024 elections are conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

“What the NDC is proposing is not just a matter of fixing the errors but also the vulnerabilities inherent in the register,” Dr. Boamah told the gathering.

According to the NDC has lost trust in the Commission because party believes that the EC does not have credibility and reliability as it stands.

Dr. Omane Boamah raised concerns about the theft of some Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

He questioned whether the missing devices were part of a move to rig the elections in any party’s favour.

“The Biometric Verification Devices kits that got stolen, could it be a product of that criminal enterprise, because those BVR laptops got stolen under CCTV surveillance?” The NDC’s director of Elections asked

He hinted that , “the layers of security at the EC is beyond what you see.”

The opposition party’s meeting with the CSOs, media and other stakeholders was necessitated by what the leadership of the NDC said was due to what they described as “unproductive” engagement with the EC on the same issue.
