Easing cross-border payment; BoG finalising agreements with Rwanda on fintech passports – 2nd Deputy Governor
The Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has revealed that the central bank is finalising agreements with the Bank of Rwanda in an effort to ease cross-border payments.
According to her, the coming into being of the BoG-BoR fintech passports will enable cross-border licensing and strengthen trade cooperation across Africa.
Speaking at the opening session of the African Prosperity Dialogues (APD) 2026 in Accra on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the Second Deputy Governor of BoG explained that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to ease cross-border payment systems on the continent.
Ms. Asante-Asiedu noted that improving payment interoperability is crucial to reducing the cost and complexity of financial transactions between African countries.
The Second Deputy Governor of BoG maintained that expensive and slow cross-border payments remain a major obstacle to the growth of intra-African trade and the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Our next-generation digital public infrastructure initiative is testing multilateral interoperability frameworks, settlement modules, and future cross-border currency arrangements. Our most recently passed Virtual Asset Service Providers Act is designed to support emerging digital channel payments while ensuring strong consumer protection and risk oversight,” she added.
