Make public those behind Sapeiman stash of counterfeit money – Prof. Aning to gov’t

The Director Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research (FAAR), Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, (KAIPTC), and a Security analyst, Professor Kwesi Aning, has admonished the John Mahama-led government to make public the identity of those responsible for the covert stash of counterfeit money and suspected gold bars found in Sapeiman, a suburb in Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra region, once investigations are concluded.
Professor Aning explained that revealing the identities of culprits would bolster public confidence in the government and deter others from engaging in similar crimes.
On Sunday, February 9, 2025, National Security Operatives acting on a tip-off, intercepted a large quantity of money, including counterfeit US dollars and Ghanaian cedi notes, along with boxes of suspected gold bars. The illicit items were hidden inside twelve 20-foot shipping containers.
The National Security Operatives raided a warehouse in Sapeiman, where the discovery was made.
The Director Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research-KAIPTC commenting on the issue in an interview with the media said he is of high hope that the perpetrators can be easily traced.
“It is easy to find those who are involved. They pick up some laptops, they pick up some smartphones—who are these people, who are their family members and friends, where do they do their banking, how did the goods come in? So it manifests, people very quickly are arrested and placed before the court of competent jurisdiction, and when they are punished for the public to be made aware, it serves as a deterrent,” he stated.
