Touch screen “Journalist” Paul Adom Otchere sued for GH¢20 million over defamation

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West Constituency in the Central region, Mrs. Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, has officially filed a GH¢20 million defamation lawsuit against the host of Good Evening Ghana, Mr. Paul Adom-Otchere, and Metro TV.
According to the writ of summons filed at the High Court in Accra, the Plaintiff is seeking GH¢20,000,000.00 (Twenty Million Ghana Cedis) in general damages for injury to her reputation.
The legal action stems from a recent editorial broadcast in which Mr. Adom-Otchere reportedly misidentified the Agona West legislator.
During the segment, Mrs. Dangbey was incorrectly labeled as the MP for Agona East and was linked to the controversial transfer of the headmistress of Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO).
In her statement of claim, the MP, Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, categorically denies the allegations, describing them as “factually inaccurate” and “malicious”.
The plaintiff contends that the broadcast wrongly attributed administrative actions to her, misleading the public and undermining her standing as the duly elected representative for Agona West.
Before the lawsuit, the Agona West branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) issued a statement demanding an unqualified apology and a retraction of the “misleading editorial”.
The suit also names Ignite Media Group (owners of Metro TV) as a defendant, seeking an order for a clear correction of facts across all platforms where the original content was published.
In addition to the GH¢20 million in damages, the MP is asking the court for:
An unconditional retraction and unqualified apology to be published prominently on all platforms used by the defendant.
An order for the complete removal of the defamatory content from the internet.
A perpetual injunction restraining Paul Adom Otchere or his agents from further publishing similar defamatory words against her.
This latest legal challenge adds to a series of defamation suits recently faced by the broadcaster, including a GH¢30 million suit filed by former Minerals Commission CEO Dr. Tony Aubynn in late 2024.
