Post-Election Violence: “We stand to withdraw all parliamentary cooperation if…- NPP MPs threaten
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members in the 9th Parliament have issued a stern warning to the President John Dramani Mahama-led government to order some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop causing further chaos and mayhem in the country.
According to the NPP Members of Parliament (MPs), they will have no option but to withdraw their cooperation in all parliamentary activities if the President fails to address their concerns immediately.
The NPP Minority Caucus explained that regrettable incidents, including violence and the destruction of state property, keep occurring after the 2024 elections. It is high time President John Mahama steps in to bring peace.
Addressing some members of the Parliamentary Press Corps at the Job 600 Office Complex in Accra on Monday, January 20, 2025, the Second Deputy Minority, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, insisted that some of the violence and the destruction of state property was aimed at preventing the country’s electoral management body, the Electoral Commission (EC), from declaring parliamentary results in favour of the now-opposition party (NPP).
Mr. Ahmed Shaib cited the violence and the destruction of state property after the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, whose result is yet to be declared by the NPP candidate, as one clear example. He thus urged the President and the Election Security Taskforce to take decisive action to restore law and order.
“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party thugs to order. You cannot pretend to be unaware of all the lawlessness and violence in this country. We also call on the Ghana Police Service. IGP Dampare, we call on you and the Election Security Taskforce to rise to the occasion and enforce law and order without hesitation.
The EC officials and all the stakeholders in this electoral process must be protected. They are Ghanaians just like us. We hereby serve notice that should the president, who is the Commander-in-Chief, fail to take steps to protect the ordinary citizens, we, the minority caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw cooperation in parliament,” he reiterated.
