Vatican elects New Pope as thick white smoke appears 

Cardinals have chosen a new pope, indicated by white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney. The identity of the next pontiff is expected to be revealed shortly when he appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he will be introduced to the world with the traditional declaration: “Habemus Papam” – Latin for “We have a Pope.”

Crowds gathered in St Peter’s Square erupted into cheers as the white smoke billowed into the twilight sky. Church bells rang out across the Vatican, adding to the sense of jubilation.

 Worshippers waved flags, embraced, and prayed in celebration. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said one couple from Greece, as people surged forward to get a better view.
