Mahama appoints KNUST law lecturer Deputy EC Chair

In a major leadership update to Ghana’s electoral governance, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The high-level appointment is aimed at filling critical vacancies within the Commission’s top leadership structure following the recent departures of two senior officials.

Dr Asamoah will effectively replace either Dr Bossman Asare, who resigned as Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services on July 31, 2026, to return to academia, or Samuel Tettey, who recently reached the mandatory retirement age.

Robust Profile and Institutional Experience

Dr Asamoah brings more than 17 years of extensive experience spanning public service, corporate finance, legal practice, and electoral administration to the table.

He is well acquainted with the inner workings of Ghana’s electoral body, having previously served in multiple senior executive roles, including EC Director of Finance, Head of Audit, and Director of the Training Centre.

Outside of his notable service at the EC, Dr Asamoah is a widely respected law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a practicing legal professional.

He holds a highly decorated academic and professional portfolio, which includes a Ph.D., Master of Laws (LLM), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and qualifications as a Chartered Accountant (CA) and barrister-at-law (BL).

Transition and Swearing-In

The government had previously signaled these upcoming changes in June 2026 to ensure an orderly transition within the country’s primary electoral management body.

Dr Asamoah has arrived at the seat of government alongside Emelia Afi Agbenyo, the newly appointed co-Deputy Chairperson and former Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service.

President Mahama will administer the official oaths of office today to formalize their positions, anchoring the EC with seasoned leadership ahead of upcoming national administrative mandates.
