Caitec defies Mahama's order to reverse illegal landfilling of Weija Ramsar Site

The management of Caitec, a transport company operating in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra region, has yet to comply with a directive from the President of Ghana, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, to reverse the illegal reclamation of portions of the Weija Ramsar Site.

President Mahama issued the directive during his recent tour of flood-prone areas in Accra, instructing the company to undo the illegal reclamation it is engaging in at its own cost to allow for easier dredging as Accra prepares for the rains.

However, weeks after the presidential directive, an inspection conducted by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), headed by the Regional Minister, Madam Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, revealed that the president’s orders had been disregarded.

Speaking to the media after the inspection on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the Greater Accra Regional Minister expressed disappointment at the company’s failure to act.

The visibly concerned Madam Akweley Ocloo warned that the government, through REGSEC, would not hesitate to take matters into its own hands if the company continued to defy the president’s directive.

“We came here, and His Excellency told them that they should do two things: they should scoop all the materials that they used to fill this place, and also dredge the place at their own cost. We sent a letter to them, only for us to come here today and see what we are seeing. So we will go back, remobilise, and come back with our machine to do whatever we want to do.

There are a lot of machines there, so releasing the machine shouldn’t be a problem for them. So this is intentional, and I don’t know who is compromising with them and the entire assembly to overlook the messages that have been sent to them.

They are aware that the exercise is to start today, only for us to come and meet what we just met. So we will go back and do what we have to do. If the company refuses, we will enforce the law,” the Minister reiterated.
