Garu MP Dr. Thomas Anabah Accounts to Constituents on First-Year Stewardship

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Garu Constituency in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Dr. Thomas Winsum Anabah, has formally rendered an account of his first year in Parliament, highlighting significant strides in healthcare, education, and rural infrastructure.

Speaking with the media after a working visit to inspect ongoing projects, Dr. Anabah, a medical professional and former CEO of the Ridge Hospital, emphasized that his first 12 months have been defined by a “Leadership of Service” aimed at reversing the developmental lag in the Garu district.

The MP toured several sites currently under construction. These include classroom blocks, health facilities, and water supply projects aimed at improving living conditions in the district.

Key Achievements Highlighted

Central to his report was the revival of the Garu Yiiga Ambulance, which he donated from his private facility, Habana Medical Services. The ambulance, which had previously broken down, has been fully restored to serve critical emergency needs in the constituency. He also donated medical equipment to some health facilities in the area, as construction of some CHPS compounds is ongoing.

EDUCATION

Dr. Anabah again reported the successful renovation of the Worikambo D/A JHS classroom block, a project that had been abandoned since 2022. He also renovated the Nate basic school and other schools that were in a dilapidated state in the District. Currently, construction of some basic schools is ongoing, including the Tengsung basic school.

This intervention has provided a conducive learning environment for hundreds of students who previously studied in dilapidated conditions. Some students within the district have also received scholarships to further their education through him.

WATER AND SANITATION

In collaboration with the Al-shuruq Foundation, the MP facilitated the drilling and commissioning of 11 boreholes across various communities, including Kpatia, Yizidug, Denugu, and Gbetusuk (Avuusum).

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY

On the floor of Parliament, Dr. Anabah has been a vocal advocate for his constituents. He recently urged the government to investigate past military atrocities in the area and has called for a multispectral approach to tackling Ghana’s growing non-communicable disease (NCD) crisis.

Future Outlook: The “Garu Project”

Looking ahead to the remainder of his term, the MP announced that the government is set to support the Garu area with approximately GH₵1 billion to accelerate growth and infrastructure.

He urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain in the constituency and take advantage of upcoming irrigation and mechanization projects rather than migrating to southern Ghana.

“I pledged not to relax until my constituents get the needed growth and improved living conditions,” Dr. Anabah told the gathering. “This first year is just the foundation of the ‘Project Garu’ we promised.”

The event concluded with a “Thank You” tour across various communities, where the MP and constituency executives engaged with local chiefs and residents to gather feedback for the 2026 developmental cycle.

The District Chief Executive for Garu, John Abugba Abaare, also stated that the District Assembly is working closely with the Member of Parliament to complement these development efforts.

He assured residents that the Assembly remains committed to supporting initiatives that will enhance socio-economic growth and improve service delivery in the district.

The Garu District remains one of the country’s underdeveloped districts. While some communities continue to struggle for access to basic healthcare services, others face challenges with inadequate educational infrastructure, potable water, and other essential social amenities.
