Justice Gertrude Torkornoo booted out for abuse of office

The embattled Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has finally been booted out office following the recommendation of the Committee set up to probe petitions that cited her for stated misbehaviour.

President John Dramani Mahama took the decision following the receipt of the report of the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, calling for her removal.

After examining the petition, extensive evidence, and testimonies, the Committee concluded that the allegations of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been sufficiently proven. It therefore recommended her removal from office.

Per Article 146(9) of the Constitution, the President is bound to act in accordance with the Committee’s findings and recommendation.

Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a statement on Monday September 1, 2025 said the removal of the Chief Justice was in accordance of the law.

He assured the public that the process was conducted in strict adherence to constitutional requirements, with both the petitioner and the Chief Justice afforded full opportunity to present their cases before the Committee.
