Speaker Bagbin vows relentless fight against corruption

Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has vowed to stage a relentless fight against corruption which has become endemic in the country.
He is thus calling for a unified national effort to confront and dismantle corruption and corrupt practices head-on, as the canker continues to hinder Ghana’s developmental agenda.
The Speaker called to action, urging citizens, government, and civil society to work together through vigilance, education, and institutional reform to uproot corruption and foster a fairer, more prosperous Ghana
Delivering the keynote address at the Governance and Anti-Corruption Summit organised by the Bright Future Alliance on June 29, 2025, Speaker Bagbin described the scale of corruption as alarming, warning that the country loses millions of cedis daily through corrupt practices, tax evasion, and illicit financial flows.
Referencing both historic and recent findings including the 1970 Justice Anim Report and data from the World Bank and Auditor-General’s reports he cited extensive resource leakages that have crippled national progress.
The Speaker again cited the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam project, where $12 million was reportedly disbursed with no corresponding work done, calling it a glaring example of how corruption erodes Ghana’s development potential.
He warned that corruption hits the poor hardest, deepening poverty and inequality, and urged Ghanaians to recognise the urgency of reform.
Speaker Bagbin also outlined ongoing reforms in Parliament aimed at strengthening accountability, including enhanced oversight committees and the introduction of new bodies such as the Department of Public Engagement and the Citizens’ Bureau.
These initiatives, he explained, are designed to boost public participation and hold public officials accountable.
Stressing that anti-corruption efforts must be people-driven, the Speaker announced the launch of a National Integrity Award Scheme to honour individuals and institutions upholding high ethical standards.
