Government plans to construct 600 CHPS compounds to enhance access to primary healthcare: – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that the John Dramani Mahama-led government is in the process of constructing 600 Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) commonly known as CHPS compounds, nationwide by the end of the year 2025.

The minister described the initiative as a major step toward improving healthcare delivery across the country, especially in underserved and rural communities where access to basic medical services remains a challenge.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu hinted that the government is looking beyond this initial target of 600 new CHPS compounds with long-term goals to significantly scale up rural healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking on the initiative, the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications explained that the project will be implemented with each district tasked to construct two new CHPS compounds this year alone.

“Each district is required to construct two new CHPS compounds this year. Altogether, that amounts to about 600 CHPS compounds in 2025 alone.

If we are able to sustain this momentum, we could exceed 2,000 CHPS compounds over the next four years,” the minister said.

The CHPS strategy he noted is a key component of Ghana’s primary healthcare system, bringing essential health services closer to communities and relieving pressure on hospitals.
