Minority leadership tours Kantamanto market donates GHS200k to support fire victims

Leadership of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members (Minority) in Ghana’s Parliament on Tuesday, April 14, 2025, paid a day’s visit to the rebuilt Kantamanto market, which was gutted by fire a few months ago, to acquaint themselves with the progress of work done so far.
The leader of the Minority Caucus, who doubles as Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency in the Central region, Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, on behalf of the caucus, donated Ghc200,000 to support victims of the Kantamanto Market fire outbreak.
The fire, which occurred on January 2, 2025, destroyed parts of the Kantamanto Market in Accra, resulting in the loss of goods and property worth several million of Ghana Cedis.
Addressing leadership and some traders after the tour, Mr. Afenyo-Markin called on the government to access funds from the Contingency Fund to provide additional support to affected traders.
“We appeal to the government to come to your aid. Recently, we approved the budget, and we are aware that the contingency fund is available to assist in times of crisis.
We also urge the companies from whom you have taken loans to consider the situation and reduce interest rates and also extend the repayment period to give affected traders some financial relief.
This is Ghc200,000, it is a modest contribution from us, the mighty minority, to support you,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He also appealed to the traders to be law-abiding. “We all should be law-abiding, we should pay our taxes to enable the government to undertake its developmental agenda.
It doesn’t matter which party is in government today, after the 2024 election, the mandate to run the country was given to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and John Dramani Mahama, and so we all have to do our bits to support him to build Ghana,” the Minority Leader reiterated.
