Nuclear energy stands out as a transformative force to catalyze economic development across Africa – Virginia Palmer

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia E. Palmer, has revealed that Nuclear energy stands out as a transformative force that can catalyze economic development across Africa, especially in Ghana.

According to the U S Ambassador to Ghana, Nuclear energy offers a level of reliability and efficiency that other clean technologies cannot always match.

Speaking at a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony to launch the first NuScale Power Energy Exploration (E2) Center situated at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences in Accra on Thursday, January 2025, Madam Palmer explained that reliable energy access is fundamental to progress.

According to her, the United States is at the forefront of developing new and advanced nuclear technologies that hold great promise for addressing challenges faced by many regions in Africa.

She commended Ghana for her pursuit of establishing a Nuclear power plant. The United States is thus very pleased to have had the opportunity to partner with Ghana on this project.

Madam Palmer explained that the E2 Center represents a leap forward in our collaborative efforts to enhance energy security and sustainability in Ghana. This state-of-the-art facility will provide invaluable training and career development opportunities for Ghanaian engineers and technicians, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to operate and maintain advanced nuclear technologies.

“U.S. small modular reactors – or SMRs – and other advanced reactor technologies build on more than 65 years of U.S. innovation and expertise in nuclear energy.

These new and advanced reactor designs can be scalable to suit a country’s specific needs. They have a variety of potential applications, including power generation, desalination, and heat for industrial processes. Most importantly, the SMRs designed in the United States feature the latest advancements in safety systems and demonstrate our commitment to the highest standards for nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation.

We believe that the nuclear cooperation between Ghana and the United States reflects our shared commitment towards global nonproliferation and that the safety and security standards that U.S. technology offers are the path to achieving those shared goals.

The United States is proud to support Ghana in its pursuit of energy independence and economic growth,” the United States Ambassador to Ghana reiterated.
