GALAMSEY – A THREAT TO GOD’S PERFECT CREATION

As Ghana embraces the passing seasons, a resounding cry echoes from its youth, echoing the sacred duty to protect the divine masterpiece that is God’s creation.

Amongst the lush landscapes and majestic waterways lies a threat to this intricate beauty – the

scourge of illegal mining, locally known as “Galamsey.”

In this time of reflection, let us draw wisdom from the scriptures:

“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

The youth of Ghana stand as custodians of God’s perfect creation, recognizing the solemn responsibility bestowed upon them. From the verdant forests to the meandering rivers, the beauty of Ghana’s landscapes is a testament to the divine artistry woven into every corner of the earth.

The menace of Galamsey poses a dire threat to this natural splendor. Illicit small-scale gold mining operations wreak havoc on ecosystems, leaving scars upon the land and tarnishing the pristine beauty bestowed upon Ghana.

The Youth Gate of Advocates for Christ Ghana mourns the devastating impact of Galamsey on our water bodies, transforming them into poisoned sources that endanger life itself.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis 2:15)

Yes, the harmful practices associated with illegal mining have desecrated our rivers and soils. Toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide pollute once-pure waters, imperiling aquatic life and the health of surrounding communities as well as the yet unborn generations.

We are faced with the existential threat of having to import potable drinking water into the country in the very near future if this trend continues.

Our forests, once teeming with life, have fallen victim to Galamsey’s grasp. Deforestation ravages the land, disrupting the delicate balance of ecosystems and driving countless species toward extinction as well as decimating our hitherto booming cocoa industry, a source of much needed foreign exchange.

The intricate web of life, woven by the Creator’s hand, unravels before our eyes as profit-driven motives eclipse the sacred duty to protect and preserve.

“The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” (Proverbs 12:10)

Ghana stands at a crossroads, torn between short-term gain driven by the love of money which the Bible reminds us is the root of much evil, and the long-term preservation of God’s creation. It is a call to action, a plea to restore equilibrium and uphold our duty as custodians of this magnificent land.
