The statement continued with a tribute and heartfelt sympathy.

“At this trying time, our prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends. The circumstances are being handled by the SAPS, and more information will be released when it is ready. May peace be granted to his beloved soul.”

Luke Fleurs was shot and murdered by the suspects during the Wednesday night incident at a gas station in a Florida suburb, according to information provided by Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the spokeswoman for the Gauteng police.

“The suspects took him out of his car, pointed a gun at him, and shot him once in the upper body.”

After being transported to the closest medical facility, the defender’s death was officially declared upon arrival. Although the police have started looking into the shooting, no one has been taken into custody as of yet.

Before spending five years at SuperSport United, Fleurs began his career as a professional at Ubuntu Cape Town.

After making several youth appearances for the South African national side and representing his nation in the Olympics in Tokyo, he joined the Kaizer Chiefs last year.
