Ahmed Ibrahim pledges to improve property rate collection policy
The Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Member of Parliament (MP) of Banda Constituency in the Bono, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim has pledged to improve the property rate collection policy to generate enough funds for the operations of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Answering questions from members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, during his vetting, the Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, emphasised the importance of revenue generation within the various MMDAs.
According to him, property rate collection is the quickest means to generate revenue at the district level.
The Banda MP pledged to ensure the system is decentralised for the assemblies to undertake the collections, ensuring its efficiency.
“Ever since I entered this chamber, Minister of Local Government upon Minister of Local Government has been complaining about one critical thing and that is property rate. One critical area that we can do. The property rate is one-hanging fruit to ensure we improve the funding of MMDAs.
We were in this house when the budget was passed and the property rate was centralised, taking that core function from the MMDAs.
The central government could not do it and therefore it was later suspended and given back to the MMDAs. We will not centralise it, we will decentralise it and it will help enhance their capacity,” Mr. Ibrahim reiterated.
